CD-ED is very excited to announce their brand new
Health Information Management program.**

Health information management professionals manage healthcare data and information resources, including services in planning, collecting, aggregating, analyzing, and disseminating individual patient data and aggregate clinical data.

Healthcare records are needed for healthcare delivery & management planning, for indicating disease patterns and trends, and for analysis by medical researchers.

CD-ED is working with local healthcare and health information development professionals to develop this program to the CHIMA standards. We expect the program to be enrollable in 2009. Please let us know if you're interested and we'll keep you updated!

Career Prospects

In this challenging two year program, you’ll be learning how to use a computer (Microsoft Windows XP or Vista), how to navigate the internet, and how to use Microsoft Office including Excel 2007, Word 2007, and advanced database management using Microsoft Access 2007.  Following that, students will cover:

  • Advanced Medical Terminology covering all body systems
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Diseases affecting each body system
  • Electronic health record
  • Confidentiality and Medical Ethics
  • ICD-10-CA and CCI classifications
  • Law for Canadian Health Care Administrators
  • Communication for the HIM professional – oral and written
  • Canadian healthcare system
  • Epidemiologic study of acute disease
  • Statistical Applications for Health information Management

This diploma program is being developed based on the standards set out by The Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) in the Learning Outcomes for Health Information Management Diploma Programs document. CHIMA represents approximately 3,000 health information management professionals who manage the security, privacy and accuracy of patient information in hospitals across Canada.

If you already have a job as a medical office administrator, chances are they’re looking for you to do some training to learn the brand-new ICD-10-CA/CCI coding system that is desperately needed in hospitals across the country. Now’s your opportunity to learn these new skills.

Since all of our programs are flexible and available at your convenience, you’ll easily be able to continue working while upgrading your skills – or learning about an exciting new field!

This program is in development and we expect it to be ready for enrolment some time in 2009.*

Pre-requisites include:

  1. a High School diploma or GED High School Equivalency including Grade 12 English, Math and one Grade 12 science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics). Graduates of our Medical Office Administration diploma program will also be considered;
  2. a typing speed of 30wpm;
  3. a Criminal Check (including children) - required to do practicum;
  4. an essay outlining why you wish to participate in this program;
  5. completion of an English proficiency test;
  6. immunization as required prior to practicum; and
  7. a telephone interview for admissions.

*Pending Dept. of Education Approval. This course is in development for 2009.
